Project Inaayat is an initiative which aims to address critical issues of clean water and climate action. It specifically targets the challenge posed by water hyacinth (natively known as Jalkumbhee), an aquatic weed that has invaded freshwater systems in over 50 countries across the world. Water hyacinth doubles its population in 5 days; forming dense, impenetrable mats that clog waterways, blocking sunlight and reducing dissolved oxygen levels underwater by upto 30%.
We strive to curtail water pollution caused by water hyacinths & protect various life forms below water by ethically uprooting the water weed, turning them into a range of sustainable products thus transforming challenges into opportunities for positive change. Inaayat is not just a solution but a creative revolution which redefines sustainability.
Additionally, our initiative indirectly combats plastic pollution by offering sustainable alternatives to plastic products, thus reducing the overall amount of plastic waste dumped in rivers. Our primary sales channels encompass Instagram direct messages, college festivals, and exhibitions. All production is undertaken by beneficiaries from the migrant community residing in Delhi. Our team has worked tirelessly to identify and create opportunities for the community members to earn a living, which has helped in their overall upliftment.
Currently, our main avenue is making handicrafts out of water hyacinths. The products that we currently offer are coasters and table mats, which are crafted from water hyacinths. By using water hyacinths, we provide a sustainable option as opposed to their plastic equivalents.
We are continuously striving to broaden our range of products, and we intend to introduce various items like basket, hat, fruit tray, furniture, handbag, and purses, briquettes, biofuel, and biomass, all of which will be made out of water hyacinths.
We at Project Inaayat, aim towards improving the environmental conditions by effectively utilising the hidden prospects of water hyacinths while providing sustainable opportunities for economic development.
Our project has impacted more than 52,000 lives in migrant communities. Our beneficiaries converted water hyacinth into beautiful handicraft items and briquettes, reducing the overall carbon footprint by 0.307 metric tons.
We have been successfully able to reduce 35000 kg of material ocean waste and cleared 4000 litres of contaminated water, conserving 64 species of fish.
